Kadellam pichi poovu - Karaiyellam shenbagapoo

Pandian Hanumanthan writes:

King’s Treasuries – Part 14

Two classic numbers from the film “கரையெல்லாம் செண்பகப்பூ “ (Karaiyellam Shenbaga poo”).

1981 Film, popular Sujatha Novel, casting Prathab Pothan, Sripriya,Sumalatha and Manorama, Lyricist Panchu Arunachalam, film directed by Rangarajan.

1. காடெல்லாம் பிச்சுப்பூவு

Title song of Raja has always been a fascination for us, one goes with great expectations in each movie in those days. This is really one of the best of Raja’s Title songs.

Prathab Pothan walking down with Guitar, accompanied by Sripriya, with the back drop of green fields, coconut grooves etc. a feast both to the eyes and ears.

Raja has predominantly used Guitar both lead and the Base, coupled with Flute and Chorus singers.
It starts with a beautiful slow Guitar piece which is intruded suddenly by the Drum beat and Base Guitar setting the mood and the course of the song.

The beat is something unique and novel in this song, it is not easy to sing this song for that rhythm which on the face of it appear to be off beat.

The best part is the Yethaam song in third BGM

ஏலோ ஏலேலோ கரிசக்காரி வளமாகத்தான் ஏத்தம் கட்டி ஏலோ ஏலேலோ
அத்தை மக இறைக்கும் தண்ணீ அத்தனையும் சக்கரைதான் சக்கரைதான் ஏலேலோ (watch Base Guitar after this)

At the end of yetham song after ஏலோ ஏலேலோ the base guitar( it could be from keyboard also) will step in, travel to different notes and slowly slide down to the note ( with Santoor) required by the singer to start the second Charanam comfortably.

This is one of the eccentricity of Raja, BGMS sometimes will go out of the song totally, wander here and there and smoothly get back to the song. The transition is always delightful

2. ஏரியிலே எலந்த மரம் தங்கச்சி வச்ச மரம்

Out and out rustic folk song. This song will literally take you to that village.
Ilaya raja starts with his voice, teaches the kids in the village and the song starts with Sa re ga ma ( with Guitar backing) followed by chorus “ thanthantha nanana thanthanana ” in different parts.
The whole song is dominated by chorus done in parts with very few instruments.

S Janaki has rendered nicely particularly “ஒரு காயூமில்ல பூவுமில்ல ஒன் தங்கச்சி வச்ச மரம்” line is very touching both in terms of delivery and the tune.

This song may not have gained any importance for many , but I am sure you will enjoy now.
